Ma al di là dei premi, tutta la cerimonia è stata segnata dal la scomparsa di Whitney Houston, celebrata con una toccante e semplice preghiera per Whitney Houston, seguita con partecipazione da tutta la platea riunita allo Staples Center, poi le note e il video di "I will always love you", il piu' grande successo della cantante nemmeno cinquantenne trovata morta venerdi' in una stanza d'albergo di Beverly Hills.
